Getting Control of Time

When someone is lost in the woods, his first inclination is denial. Then he starts to realize he really is lost, and starts to move faster. It’s called “Bush Panic.” Instead of stopping to evaluate his situation (like, where could I sleep tonight, or what will I eat, or how could I contact someone?), he uses all his energy, often running in circles… until the sun sets and he’s now in a real pickle.

As a busy mother, I’ve often felt “bush panic” at home. My to-do list gets longer, and I start to realize that there is NO WAY I can possibly get it all done — yet I realize that it MUST get done… there will be consequences if I don’t… and others try to help, but they just do it wrong and create even MORE work for me to do…

And the panic rises inside of me. I get mad at those around me… or I cry… or I keep going faster and faster, staying up later and later…

Until I collapse.

So how can we prevent “bush panic”? What can we do when we realize there are honestly more things to do in our days than we have time for?

1. Stop and evaluate.

This is good advice if you’re lost in the woods, and it’s good advice if you’re lost in a whirlwind of activity.

I’m often too tired at this point to even pray! Often, my husband will take me out, late in the evening (when my little ones are tucked into bed and my older teenagers can babysit), to a little restaurant where it’s quiet and we can talk. I’ll share my concerns (with animated hands waving and that “wide-eyed” look in my eyes, LOL), and he’ll jot a few things down. (Mostly he just listens.) At the end, I feel a lot better.

But “getting things off my chest” doesn’t really solve the problem. My problem is that I’m trying to do 36 hours of work in 24 hours, day after day. I’ll start to worry all over again, probably in the middle of the night, if I don’t come up with some sort of solution.

This is where I need to start to pray. “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him” (James 1:5).

2. Make a list.

Often my husband has an opinion about why I’m too busy. I need to learn to be humble and listen to him. My husband’s advice needs to be written down, with red stars next to it and a yellow box around it. 🙂

(I’ve asked God for wisdom, right? My husband’s mouth is usually where God’s answer starts.)

Next I need to make an honest list of everything I’m involved in and how much time it requires of me. This step might take a few days, because if I rush it, I’ll forget a few things — and then wonder later why I can’t fit everything in again.

I have a permanent list always going. Then, if I feel “bush panic” again in a few months, I can go back to my permanent list and evaluate a little quicker, without having to start the brainstorming all over again.

Finally, I add up all the times listed. There are 24 hours in a day (but only 16 hours after sleep — and yes, I must sleep sometime). There are 168 hours in a week (but only 144 hours if I take a full, 24-hour Sabbath each week). Now I can see honestly how bad my problem is.

3. Why did it get this bad?

I need to ask some honest questions (and maybe it’s time for a second “date night” with my husband).

  • Do I delegate any of the work to my children, or do I try to do everything myself?
  • Am I pregnant or do I have a young baby? If so, this is probably just a “season” (even if it feels like a long season at the moment!). If my baby is old enough, do I need to teach him to sleep so that I can get some rest, too?
  • Is a financial problem causing some of the stress I’m feeling? Am I working the equivalent of 2 or 3 full-time jobs?
  • Is our family involved in too many activities outside the home?
  • Do I have trouble saying “no” without guilt? Do I neglect to ask my husband’s opinion before saying “yes”?
  • Am I distracted by too much television, the telephone, or the computer?
  • Am I sick?

4. How can we fix this mess?

What does the Bible say? (I love how God’s Word always has an answer!)

Well, I know God says that sleep is important, so I can’t fix the  mess by cutting corners here. In case you don’t believe me, take a look:

“Unless YHWH builds the house,
its builders labor in vain.
Unless YHWH watches over the city,
the watchmen stand guard in vain.
In vain you rise early
and stay up late,
toiling for food to eat—
for he grants sleep to those he loves”
(Psalm 127:1-2).

But what about the Proverbs 31 woman?

  • Yes, she woke up early in the morning (see Proverbs 31:15), but I’ve heard some say, because “her candle goeth not out by night” (Proverbs 31:18), that she also stayed up late each night. I suppose it seems like she’d have to, with everything she accomplished in these verses! But as I’ve written in another post, I believe that this verse is saying that the candles she made were of such good quality that they could burn into the night without losing their light. In other words, she was selling candles that didn’t burn out — not burning herself out!
  • As the verses from Psalm 127 above say, it’s vain for us to rise up early OR stay up late, if we’re laboring in our own strength to build our homes. Without leading, guiding, and strength from our heavenly Father, we’re building “in vain.” I love what my friend Jenny says,

“If your agenda for today feels like it is robbing you of peace, scrap it and ask God what His agenda might be for your family today. Maybe He is asking you to let everybody off the hook and focus on viewing those around you through the eyes of love and joy. Let God overhwhelm you today with His goodness.” (Read more…)

Seriously, dear woman, if God created six days in a week to work, with only a certain number of hours of daylight in each, how could it possibly be His will for your life to accomplish more? (I know there is a verse somewhere in Psalms or Isaiah or somewhere that talks about working only when the sun is up…. but I’m running out of hours in my day to go look that one up. LOL!)

  • Try to get up at the same time each morning.
  • Try to eat at the same times each day. Even Baby can learn to eat at about the same times each day, even though her meals will be much more frequent.
  • Make a menu every week. (You can use ours if you’d like.)
  • Enforce a short quiet time each afternoon.
  • Pick up the clutter twice a day. Late afternoon and before bed are good times.
  • Watch out for time thieves: your phone, Facebook, TV, and outside activities.
  • Mom, start your own day with prayer. If you’re too tired to pray, just recite the Master’s prayer slowly (Matthew 6:9-13), thinking about each phrase.

What things on your list can wait for another season? What can wait until you’re not on bedrest any longer? What can wait until you’re not nursing a baby in the middle of the night any longer? What can wait until all your children are potty trained? What can wait until you’re no longer teaching Algebra? Is the fate of the entire universe really resting on your shoulders?

And as for homeschooling, what can you cut out, while still providing an excellent education? When I was just getting started as a new homeschooling mom, an experienced mother of five told me to read to my children daily, have them journal each day, and do a tiny bit of math and phonics each day. Everything else could go. Here’s how I break it down:

  • Read a little bit of Scripture to your children every day, instilling a love for YHWH in them. Spend time in prayer for a few minutes.
  • Have each child, from age 5 up, copy just a little bit of Scripture each day. Do this every day!
  • Try to do a bit of math at least 3 times a week.
  • If you still have more time, do a bit of phonics with the younger ones and grammar with the older ones.
  • If you still have more time, think about history, then science.
  • If, if, if… you have extra time, you can do Hebrew, music, art, P.E., poetry, you-name-it. But the basics listed above will provide a good education without any extras, especially if it’s “just for a season.”

So don’t let “bush panic” take over your life! Slow down… hug some little ones… just do what’s important, not what’s urgent. Believe me, your little ones will soon be getting ready for college like my “baby” is. As much as possible, enjoy these years of motherhood!
