Our spelling program has two levels. Levels 1-2 are based upon the Orton-Gillingham approach to phonics and can be used in conjunction with our Phonics program. Levels 3-5 have spelling words based upon the 2000 most commonly misspelled words.
How to Use This Curriculum
Levels 1-2 are introduced to approximately 15-20 new words introduced each week. These words are simpler than the words being read in our phonics program, so many will be a review. Copywork and dictation exercises are given, but do not feel you must do everything the worksheets suggest.
Levels 3-5 are introduced to approximately 10 new words each week. Students study only the words which they misspell on a pretest.
LESSON PLAN FORMAT
The lessons include a short teacher’s guide and daily student worksheets that can be printed and inserted into 3-ring binders.
We also suggest allowing students to go online to SpellingCity.com, a free website with simple review games and activities. This is optional, and other spelling games and activities are recommended in the Teacher’s Manual.
Students are tested each Friday. In our home, students who spell 100% of their words correctly get a piece of candy. Since we don’t eat much candy in our home, this is a real treat! I keep our Candy Box on a shelf in the school room as a motivator. 😉
Note to Busy Moms
By the way, if your day is full and your energy is waning, spelling is a good subject to delegate to older students. Siblings make great spelling tutors. 🙂
