Anne, one of the most helpful books I found on the internet to teach reading was a free PDF book: “Word Mastery, A Course in Phonics for the First Three Grades” by Florence Akin. It was published in 1913. Ms. Akin provides very good advice and information in the beginning of the book to help the teacher (parent) know just how to teach the student. I’ve used it to teach 3 of my 7 children to read. I would have used it on the first 4 had I known of it’s existence. If you don’t mind, I provide the link for download here:
